LAFAYETTE, La. –
A children’s book written by a Lafayette woman hits shelves Tuesday.
Today, Alysson Bourque held a signing for her award winning book “Alycat and the Thursday Dessert Day,” the first book in the series, at the Little Gym in Lafayette.
“Alycat is kind of based on me,” Alysson said. “Alycat is a cat who likes to day dream. She likes to use her imagination. When I was a kid, I used to day dream all the time and imagine all kinds of different adventures and people would call me ‘Alycat’ as a kid. So it’s kind of evolved from my childhood experiences and also my kids experiences.”
The idea of the book started when Alysson’s two kids asked for more books for their book shelf, but instead of buying more, she promised to write them one herself. The next night she read them the story of Alycat on dessert day.
“I thought it was amazing,” Izzy, Alysson’s 7-year old daughter, said. “Once she finished she said ‘I need help making an ending,’ so we all thought about an ending and finally we came up with one where….well I want it to be a surprise.”
“They say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ and they come up with all kinds of wild endings, so I have to kind of cut it back a little bit but it’s a family effort.”
Alysson said the key to writing a children’s book is thinking like a child and using phrases they do.
She said she is thankful for the support in her hometown.
“It’s been so heart-warming,” Alysson said. “It really touches my heart because the people here in Lafayette are amazing and they are supportive of people who have dreams and goals. They support their community and I’m overwhelmed with joy at the turn out and the outpouring of love and support for the book.”
One of her biggest cheerleaders is Izzy who said almost every one of her friends at school has one of her mom’s books.
“I’m like really really really proud,” Izzy said. “She is unbelievable. She just…I can’t say it. She is awesome and she did the best book in the world.”
“Alycat and the Thursday Dessert” will be available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Target and Books-A-Million on Tuesday. It is also available locally at Kiddeaux’s and Lolli and Bop.
Plush dolls of the Alycat character are also available for sale.
Alysson plans to release another book in the spring.
